With a leather strop and diamond paste, you can take the edge to a level barely achievable with sharpening alone. This DMT Diamond Paste Set contains three grit sizes: 6 micron, 3 micron, and 1 micron. With these, you can progressively refine the edge. Start with 6 micron for a fine refinement of the edge, then move to 3 micron, and finish with 1 micron for an exceptionally smooth and sharply polished edge.

Apply only a small amount of paste to a leather strop, a piece of MDF, balsa wood, or even sturdy cardboard. Then, gently pull the knife across the surface, always with the edge trailing the direction of movement. This prevents damage to the strop and polishes the edge in a controlled manner.

Many knife enthusiasts use a strop immediately after sharpening, but a strop with diamond paste is also ideal for maintaining sharpness between sharpenings. A few strokes can often be enough to restore that fresh, aggressive sharpness to a good knife without having to resort to sharpening stones again.
